Spring is in the air — bringing songbirds, flowers and warmer temperatures back into our lives at last. You may also have noticed a change in how your piano sounds…

Expert piano tuning is the most critical factor in ensuring your piano sounds its best, but changes in humidity — which inevitably happen as the seasons change — will also impact how quickly your instrument falls out of tune, as well as its tone and responsiveness to touch.

The reason is fairly simple. Every piano consists of thousands of pounds of string tension, anchored to a structure mostly made of wood. Just like the doors in the older homes of Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph expand and contract with the weather, the wood of your piano expands and contracts in direct reaction to the moisture in the air.

When humidity rises, as it often does in spring, the wooden components of the piano — especially the soundboard — can absorb moisture and swell. This swelling increases pressure on the strings, causing the pitch to rise (go sharp). When the air becomes dry, as it often does in winter, those same components shrink, reducing tension on the strings and causing the pitch to fall (go flat).

When your indoor air humidity is not closely monitored, these seasonal or even daily fluctuations create a constant cycle of expansion and contraction. Even if your piano is freshly tuned, unstable humidity can undo that work quickly.

Maintaining a consistent humidity level in your home is the easiest and most effective way to extend the life of your tuning and keep your piano sounding its best.

The ideal humidity range for pianos

We recommend maintaining a relative humidity level of 40–45% year-round in the room where you keep your piano. This range provides a stable environment that helps preserve tuning stability and also protects the internal structure of your piano from long-term damage.

What happens when piano humidity is too high?

Over time, too much high humidity can lead to permanent structural changes, like warped soundboards or by weakening the pinblock that holds the tuning pins in place. In the shorter term, you may notice:

Swelling of wooden parts such as the soundboard, bridges, and pinblock

Increased string tension, causing the piano to go sharp

Rust forming on strings and metal components

Sluggish or sticky keys due to felt and wood expansion

Muffled tone or buzzing sounds

What Happens When Piano Humidity Is Too Low?

One of the most serious long-term risks of not keeping humidity within the ideal range is cracking of the soundboard, which can be costly to repair and significantly affects the instrument’s tone if not caught early. In the shorter term, your piano may experience:

Wood shrinkage, leading to small cracks in the soundboard

Reduced string tension, causing the piano to go flat

Loose tuning pins, which directly impact tuning stability

Noisy or uneven key action

Loss of tonal richness

Tools to Help You Control Humidity

Hygrometer

This inexpensive device measures the amount of humidity in the air. We recommend the Inkbird IBS-TH2 Bluetooth Thermometer & Hygrometer.

Evaporative Humidifier

In dry conditions, these devices add moisture to the air by drawing in dry air and passing it through a moist wick filter. We recommend the AIRCARE MA0800 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier.

Dehumidifier

In more humid seasons or environments, a dehumidifier helps remove excess moisture from the air. We recommend Ruwora products. Reliable dehumidification keeps swelling in check and prevents issues like rust and sluggish action.

Your Home’s HVAC System

Your furnace and air conditioning system can significantly influence indoor humidity levels. However, relying on them alone is often not enough to maintain the narrow 40–45% range your piano needs.

Adding a humidifier to your furnace system or using standalone units can help stabilize conditions throughout your home, especially during seasonal transitions.

Dedicated piano humidity control systems

For those looking for a more precise and low-maintenance solution, dedicated piano humidity control systems are available. These systems monitor the humidity inside your piano and gently dries and humidifies the air to maintain stability. This creates a stable microclimate within the instrument, regardless of the room’s conditions. If you are interested in exploring this option, we recommend Piano Lifesaver, which offers a number of systems to meet your needs. For pricing on installation, please see here.

The Hidden Cost of Ignoring Humidity

Many piano owners don’t realize that inconsistent humidity doesn’t just affect tuning — it reduces the effectiveness of every service performed on the instrument. Tunings may not hold, regulation can shift and repairs may not last as long as intended. By controlling humidity, you’re protecting your investment in all aspects of piano care.

When humidity is properly controlled, the difference in your piano is noticeable. You can expect to see longer-lasting tunings, more consistent tone, fewer mechanical issues and an instrument that is more responsive to the touch.

Humidity control is critical to your piano’s performance and longevity. Without it, even the best tuning and maintenance work won’t hold up over time. By keeping your piano in a stable environment — ideally between 40–45% relative humidity — you protect its structure, preserve its sound, and dramatically improve tuning stability.

Spring has sprung — ushering in warmer temperatures, budding leaves and a chance to clean house for the season ahead. While you are thinking about spring cleaning, don’t forget your piano!

As any piano lover will tell you, a piano is more than just a simple instrument. It’s a complex piece of craftsmanship that is almost part of the family. Pianos can last for generations — if they are properly cared for.

Your piano is a valuable asset and regular piano maintenance and cleaning are essential to maximize its beauty, sound quality and longevity. Keeping your piano in top condition — whether it’s a grand, upright or even a digital piano — is critical for performance and preserving its value.

Preserving the sound quality

The most obvious reason for maintaining and cleaning your piano is to ensure that it produces the best possible sound. Pianos, especially acoustic ones, are intricate instruments with thousands of moving parts that work together to produce the music you play. Over time, dust, dirt, and debris can negatively impact the piano’s action, accumulating inside the piano and affecting its sound quality. In particular, dust can settle on the strings, hammers, and other internal components, which can dull the tone.

By regularly cleaning the interior of your piano, you reduce the risk of buildup that could affect sound production. In addition to cleaning, it’s essential to have your piano tuned regularly by a piano tuner. A well-maintained and tuned piano will sound more vibrant and keep the pitch accurate, which is crucial for performances and practice.

Increasing the lifespan of your piano

Pianos are long-term investments, and like any other valuable asset, they require proper maintenance to ensure they last for years to come. The components inside the piano, such as the strings, hammers, and pedals, are all subject to wear and tear. Regular cleaning and tuning help minimize unnecessary stress on these parts, ultimately extending the life of the instrument.

Environmental factors, such as humidity, temperature fluctuations, and air quality, can also affect the piano’s condition. For example, high humidity can cause the wood to swell or warp, while dry conditions may cause it to crack. Maintaining a consistent environment and performing routine checks can prevent these issues and eliminate the need for costly piano repair.

Enhancing the appearance of your piano

A piano is often the centerpiece of a room, and its appearance contributes to the overall aesthetic of the space. Cleaning and maintaining the exterior of your piano helps preserve its finish, whether it’s glossy, matte, or even a more rustic look. Dust, fingerprints, and grime can build up over time, causing potential damage to the surface. Having keys, pedals, and the body of the piano professionally cleaned on a regular basis can help ensure it continues to look polished and elegant.

Regular cleaning and maintenance can also preserve a piano’s value, whether you plan to sell it one day, or pass it along to the next generation. Including your piano in your regular house cleaning rotation only takes a few minutes — and gives you peace of mind, knowing a well-kept piano is much more likely to retain its value. For those interested in piano refurbishing, cleaning the instrument is the first step toward restoring its former beauty.

Preventing mechanical problems

The intricate mechanism of a piano involves thousands of parts that need to be in good working order for the instrument to function properly. When these components aren’t regularly cleaned or maintained, they can become sluggish, out of alignment, or even break down. For example, the piano’s action — the system that translates the motion of the keys into the movement of the hammers — can become gummed up with dirt and dust, leading to sticky or unresponsive keys.

By keeping the moving parts clean and lubricated, you ensure smoother action and better responsiveness. Periodic checks by a piano tuner or technician can also help identify and fix mechanical problems before they become serious issues. This proactive approach can save you from costly repairs and extensive downtime.

Improving the playing experience

When a piano is properly maintained, it becomes more enjoyable to play. A clean and well-maintained piano responds better to touch, offering greater control and sensitivity to the player. Sticky or unresponsive keys can be frustrating, and so can a dusty or grimy piano. By cleaning the keys regularly, your piano will be a joy to play.

Regular tuning and maintenance also help maintain proper touch-weight — ensuring that the action of the keys feels consistent and natural. This is particularly important for pianists who perform at a high level.

Health and hygiene

Regular piano cleaning not only improves the appearance of your instrument, it also promotes hygiene by eliminating germs and grime that can build up. This is especially important for households with children or those who use the piano frequently.

If you or someone in your household has allergies, maintaining a clean piano can help reduce airborne particles that may trigger symptoms. To keep pianos clean between servicing appointments, use safe, gentle cleaning products and avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the surface.

Saving money on piano repairs

Preventative maintenance can save you money in the long run. By taking the time to clean and tune your piano regularly, you can identify and address small issues before they develop into major problems. For example, if you notice that a key is sticking or the pedal is malfunctioning, you can have it repaired before it leads to more significant damage that requires costly fixes. Regular piano maintenance not only helps the piano perform at its best but can also reduce the need for expensive piano repair and replacements down the road.

The role of professional technicians

While regular surface cleaning can be done at home, it’s also important to have your piano serviced inside and out by a professional technician on a regular basis. A technician can perform in-depth cleaning. They can also help with maintenance, including tuning, regulation, and voicing, which are beyond the scope of general cleaning. Professional servicing ensures that all internal components, including the action and pedals, are working as they should, positively impacting the piano’s tone.

To sum up

Maintaining and cleaning your piano is not just about keeping it looking good; it’s about ensuring that it continues to produce beautiful music, operates efficiently, and lasts for years to come. By investing time and care into your piano, you protect your investment, enhance your playing experience, and preserve the instrument’s beauty and resilience.

Whether you choose to perform routine cleaning yourself or rely on a piano technician and tuner for more comprehensive maintenance, keeping your piano in top condition is essential to getting the most out of your treasured instrument.

If you ever find that your piano needs some extra attention and you live in Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, Rockwood, Georgetown, Milton, Fergus, Elora or any point in between, we’d love to hear from you! It would be an honour to keep your piano in prime condition for years to come.

Believe it or not (and the kid in my life would prefer not to believe it), Back to School is just around the corner. For many families in the Tri-City area, this also means back to piano lessons.

Whether they are just getting started or further along in their studies, a well-tuned and regulated piano is a must for every student. Not only is it easier on everyone’s ears, it allows your child to learn more effectively.

A well-tuned and regulated piano facilitates learning in a few key ways. First, it sounds better, making practice and lessons more enticing. For more advanced students, a well-regulated piano also allows for more power and control. Proper regulation also helps alleviate the wear and tear on your piano, protecting it from all the repetition lessons and practice require.

Ensuring your piano is well tuned and regulated also helps ensure your child will enjoy playing for the long term. When notes are properly in tune, students can hear clear and accurate intervals and notes. This means their ability to train by ear increases — and who doesn’t want to be able to step away from the books and easily play their favourite songs one day?

Piano lessons are an investment — and a piano that has been tuned and regulated helps to maximize the value of that investment.

If you are located in the Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo Cambridge or Halton Hills area, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

When I sat down for my first lecture at the University of Western Ontario’s Piano Technology program, I was shocked at the complexity of what went into tuning a piano. One reason is that each and every piano is different — and, like people, each is perfectly imperfect.

The professor used words like temperament, inharmonicity and false beats — which I’d never heard before. When it came time to put what we learned into practice, he had us tune the 4ths and 5ths pure, working our way up to the octave. When we got there, the octave was way sharp. This is a great illustration of the complexity of getting a tuning right. Because the 4ths are wide and the 5ths are narrow, you can’t simply apply the exact same approach up to the octave. It’s necessary to tune to the temperament of the specific piano. Essentially, this is how piano technicians “squish” the octave together — making all intervals slightly impure, but capture the full potential and voice of the instrument.

You can hear this at work most in the 3rds and 6ths — both major and minor. For piano nerds like me, this is a source of endless fascination. I’ll get into inharmonicity and false beats in another blog post, but for anyone wishing to learn more about temperament, please get in touch!

Stay tuned!

When I think of the importance of tuning a piano to A440 (also known as Stuttgart pitch) two things come to mind:

First, is the history — A440 is the musical pitch that corresponds to the frequency of 440Hz as a tuning standard for notes of A above middle C. It was introduced in Stuttgart in the 1860s and eventually adopted in North America in the early 1930s. It’s an essential frequency, creating a baseline for pianos, brass instruments and even singers to work from.

Second, is my friend and piano mentor here in Guelph, Mike — who has perfect pitch, but grew up playing a piano tuned to a semitone flat. Whatever he played, he would hear a note below what his eyes told him it should be.

I don’t know why his family never fixed their piano, but Mike clearly went on to do just fine with his slightly imperfect perfect pitch. He heard the notes perfectly — he just had to take the extra step of “transposing” the note up a semi-tone every time.

His family could have solved this by pitch raising the piano itself, but for whatever reason — maybe the condition of the piano, maybe because pitch raises can be very tricky to pull off and they lacked confidence — they opted to let Mike keep figuring it out his way.

If you would like a more straightforward and stable approach, I highly recommend investing in a pitch raise if needed.

A pitch raise is a detailed procedure in which the piano technician tunes each string to an approximation of the target pitch, often making multiple passes to get it right. It’s an art and science to raise the pitch of a piano safely without damaging the piano or causing string breakage (though it can still happen to even the best of technicians).

Having a piano turned to the A440 standard pitch is key to developing one’s ear for music and collaboration with other musicians and singers.

At Oxford Piano, we like to take plenty of time to get to know the instrument and what it will take to do a successful pitch raise. For example, an antique Heintzman piano will have much less elasticity than a newer Yamaha piano and will require a very different approach. Diagnosing the right approach for each individual piano is the art and science of the pitch raise. It takes a high level of knowledge, skill and patience, but we believe it’s worth it!
